| POMs - New rulings for schools |
|
|
This new POMs ruling has been introduced by the school pharmacy inspector:
School nurses CAN buy:
- GSLs (General Sales Line) - any retailer can sell these to the public with restrictive pack sizes e.g. 16 pack Paracetamol, 24 pack 200mg Ibuprofen.
- P's (Pharmacy medicines) - only pharmacies can sell these to the public e.g. 32 Paracetamol, 48 or 96 Ibuprofen (N.B. 84 Ibuprofen is a POM - odd but true).
- As many packs of GSLs and Ps as they want.
Therefore - a school nurse can only buy GSLs and Ps but as many packs as they want.
School nurses CANNOT buy:
- POMS, as school nurses do not qualify to fall within the Government Act for Occupational Health Nurses.
DOCTORS ONLY can buy POMs:
- POM's, e.g. all pack sizes above 32 of Paracetamol, 84 Ibuprofen, Salbutamol Inhalers, can only be bought with an individually signed doctors order (no blanket orders allowed).
- The very first time a doctor uses Kays, he must fill in and send an original POM form giving his registration number and signature which Kays then hold on file. Thereafter, with each and every order the doctor or the school nurse must provide either:
(A) Doctors signed prescription*^ OR
(B) Doctors signed medical order on his headed paper*^
*If delivery is not to the doctor himself, then the doctor should stipulate the named individual and address for delivery.
^An original, fax or email (with scanned attachment) can be sent to Kays Medical who will in turn fulfil the order. For faxes and emails, although the order will be delivered before the original prescription or medical order arrives, it must arrive shortly afterwards.
