For: Anyone administering medicines within the care sector.
Benefits:
- Individual:
Ensures staff are aware of potential hazards of medicines and the necessity of correct adminstering procedures and recording. Useful to staff taking NVQ's in care.
- Organisation:
Ensures that residents receive the correct medicines and dosage. That staff are able to identify potential problems and that the organisation adheres to guidelines set by the National Pharmaceutial Association.
Syllabus:
- dangers of taking medicine incorrectly or by the wrong person.
- identify important information on medicine labels and any possible errors.
- identify that certain medicines need to be taken in specific ways in relation to time or food.
- understand current policy on home remedies.
- understand the legal aspects relating to administration of medication.
- understand record keeping (MAR charts)
- storage and disposal
- side effects and the reporting of them
- why clients may refuse medication and what to do
- special needs of specific groups e.g. elderly
Certificate:
- Continual assessment, no formal examination. Certificate awarded to successful candidates.
- The course is also accredited by the College of Pharmacy Practice.
