Occupational Health Nurse | Birmingham
Kays Medical is seeking a highly organised and qualified Occupational Health Nurse to join our team.
The Occupational Health Vaccination Nurse will provide vaccination services and support to students and staff at Birmingham University. This role includes administering vaccines, offering health advice, and assisting with health surveillance programs to ensure the well-being of the university community. The role focuses on promoting health, preventing illness, and ensuring compliance with university and healthcare guidelines.
Key responsibilities:
Vaccination Services:
- Administer vaccinations to students and staff in line with NHS and Public Health England guidelines, including but not limited to influenza, MMR, Hepatitis B, and meningitis vaccines.
- Ensure all vaccinations are delivered safely and efficiently, following correct clinical procedures, infection control protocols, and safety standards.
- Provide education and advice to students and staff on the importance of vaccinations and health protection.
Student Support:
- Offer tailored advice and information to students on vaccinations relevant to their course of study, particularly for those in healthcare, medical, or high-risk courses.
- Provide guidance on travel vaccinations and immunization requirements for students studying or working abroad as part of their university program.
- Address any concerns or questions students may have about vaccinations, possible side effects, and post-vaccination care.
Record Keeping and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of all vaccinations administered, ensuring data is entered promptly and securely into the Occupational Health system.
- Monitor student vaccination compliance rates and follow up with individuals who require vaccinations to meet university or healthcare placement requirements.
- Ensure that vaccination records are maintained in line with GDPR and confidentiality policies.
Health Surveillance and Promotion:
- Participate in health surveillance programs as needed, including screenings and health assessments for students in healthcare-related fields.
- Work with the Occupational Health team to promote health campaigns on vaccination, disease prevention, and general health and well-being.
- Assist in organizing and delivering health and vaccination awareness events on campus.
Clinical Governance and Standards:
- Adhere to clinical governance procedures and maintain high standards of clinical practice.
- Ensure compliance with university, NHS, and Public Health England vaccination guidelines, staying updated with any changes in vaccine protocols or schedules.
- Conduct vaccine stock management, ensuring supplies are ordered and stored correctly.
Qualifications and Experience
Key Skills and Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid NMC pin.
- Experience in delivering vaccinations, preferably in a healthcare or occupational health setting.
- Knowledge of vaccination protocols, vaccine administration, and infection control procedures.
- Ability to assess medical history and determine vaccine suitability for students with complex health conditions or contraindications.
- Excellent communication skills to provide health advice and education to a diverse student population.
- Competent in maintaining accurate and confidential medical records, both in paper and digital formats.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a university or educational setting.
- Experience in travel health and advice for international students or students going on placements abroad.
- Additional qualifications in Occupational Health Nursing or Public Health Nursing.

Additional Requirements::
- Flexibility to work on-site at Birmingham University’s Occupational Health Department and attend vaccination clinics or outreach events across the campus.
- Willingness to participate in university health campaigns and provide vaccination services at special events, such as Welcome Week or flu vaccination drives.
