C-Gel Calcium Gluconate Gel

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE)Chemical Industries Association (CIA) and National Poisons Information Service (NPIS)advise that for responsive patients, immediate decontamination is the priority for individuals exposed to hydrofluoric acid.

Even relatively low strength hydrofluoric acid is toxic and has the potential to cause not only tissue damage but nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, convulsions, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac failure and death when contaminated individuals are not treated swiftly.

C-Gel is a high performance calcium gluconate gel. C-Gel combines with and neutralises the fluoride ion present in HF acid. This helps to prevent pain and tissue damage caused by HF acid whilst a patient is in transit to hospital.

C-Gel is an easy to use cream, which can be self-administered or applied by a suitable first aider, available as a 40g tube or 500g tub.

Hexafluorine

Hydrofluoric acid exposure requires immediate specific and specialized medical treatment. Not only can this strong acid cause burns, but the fluoride ion can be quickly absorbed through the skin which can lead to nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, convulsions, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac failure.

Hexafluorine® is a unique solution for the emergency first aid decontamination of hydrofluoric acid (HF) splashes in the eyes or on the skin.

Hexafluorine® is an aqueous washing solution, with hypertonic and chelating properties, that is highly effective against hydrofluoric acid and its derivatives. It is a sterile washing solution that is able to mechanically remove excess chemical from the surface of the tissue before it has a chance to penetrate. Its hypertonic properties enable it to stop the penetration of both the H+ and F- ions, creating an inverse flow, pulling the chemicals to the surface of the skin.

Hexafluorine® has a chelating power 100 times greater than calcium gluconate gel.

Which protocol to choose?

Your organisation’s preferred procotol is ultimately decided by senior health and safety managers in consultation with their major industrial partners. We supply both major protocols in addition to a range of kits and ancillary decontamination equipment items along with specialist training courses in both main protocols.

HF Acid First Aid Training

Kays Medical have been delivering specialist first aid courses for dealing with hydrofluoric acid splashes on skin and eyes for a number of years. We offer courses covering both treatment with calcium gluconate gel and Hexaflurorine®, or if required a combined protocol.
