Course outline

A 1 day introduction to the concept of Mental Health First Aid, including relevant legislation, impact of Mental Health issues on the UK and UK business and an overview of the principles and practice of Mental Health First Aid.

Much of the course will focus on identification of individuals at risk/in crisis and effective short, medium and long-term intervention.

Delivery will be a mixture of interactive PPT presentation, group and individual exercises, Q&A and sharing of knowledge/experiences where appropriate.

The course is suitable for those wishing to learn more about the concept and benefits of Mental Health First Aid in the workplace and to provide individuals with the fundamental knowledge and skills to aid those in crisis.


Objectives

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Define health, Mental Health, Suicide, Substance misuse, Anxiety Disorder, Psychosis, Personality Disorder
  • List the main legislation which impacts provision of Mental Health First Aid in the workplace
  • Recall some of the main statistics regarding the effect of Mental Health issues on UK business
  • State the purpose, principles and practice of Mental Health First Aid in the workplace
  • Identify at risk individuals/those in crisis who may benefit from contact with a Mental Health First Aid trained individual
  • Communicate effectively with those in crisis
  • Design and implement a basic plan of action for individuals at risk/in crisis
  • Implement positive changes within the workplace regarding Mental Health
