Data Sources

All calculations are based on official UK government statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and peer-reviewed research published in medical journals.

Sources: ONS Labour Market Statistics (2024), BMC Public Health research on influenza economic burden

Flu Incidence Rate

We use a 7% annual incidence rate, meaning approximately 7 out of every 100 employees will contract flu each year. This is based on research showing 4.8 million working days lost to flu annually across the UK's 33 million workforce.

Absenteeism Calculation

When employees contract flu, they are typically absent for 2.5 days on average. The cost is calculated by multiplying expected flu cases × average absence days × daily salary (annual salary ÷ 260 working days).

Presenteeism Impact

Research shows 60–80% of people continue working while sick with flu. We use 70% as a conservative estimate. These employees work at approximately 40% reduced productivity for an average of 3 days, resulting in significant hidden costs.

Note: Presenteeism often exceeds absenteeism costs and puts co-workers at risk of infection

Salary Data

Industry-specific salary data is sourced from ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) 2024 and represents median full-time gross annual salaries for each sector.

Limitations

This calculator provides estimates for planning purposes. Actual costs will vary based on your specific circumstances, regional variations, company size, and annual flu severity. The calculator does not include additional costs such as temporary cover, overtime, or the ripple effect of contagion in the workplace.
