The UK government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have both advised the public to wear face masks to reduce the infection transmission of Covid-19. Since the 15th of June, it has been mandatory in England for people to wear face masks whilst on public transport and in hospitals. Failure to do so can result in people being refused entry and a £100 fine.

Wearing face masks will be even more important as lockdown measures continue to lift. Last week, restaurants, bars, pubs, hairdressers, hotels, cinemas, museums, tourist attractions, and other leisure facilities were reopened and the social distancing guidance was reduced from 2 metres to 1 metre. With this in mind, many of us are probably wondering what kind of face mask should we be wearing and what the benefits of wearing a face mask are.

Why should people wear a face mask?

why people should wear face masks

COVID-19 spreads through droplets from coughs, sneezes, speaking, and even breathing. These droplets travel through the air and can be breathed in by others and land on surfaces, which may then be touched by others who could then touch their face and become infected. Scientific evidence from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), has shown that face coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission of the virus in some circumstances.

The job of a face mask is to protect yourself and others. It works by blocking the source of infection, so those who may have the virus but don’t know, or are not yet showing symptoms are less likely to spread the virus to others. The main benefit of the face mask is that it will catch most of the wearer’s germs, making them less of a risk of infection to others, whilst also offering a level of protection against others.

There are many different kinds of face masks available, and different types of masks offer varying levels of protection. Although other masks may offer some level of protection, the masks with the highest level of protection are the medical grade face masks, such as Kays Medical’s Type IIR face masks.

Type IIR fluid-resistant medical face masks are recommended for primary, outpatients, community and social care settings, NHS and independent sector. These 3 ply face masks have an integrated nose clip to ensure a close fit and are certified for medical use. Many face masks on the market are not certified and do not carry the IIR for fluid resistance/repellent, so are not as effective. There are many benefits to wearing a Type IIR medical face mask, including:

  • Peace of mind – these medical face masks prevent large particles expelled by the wearer from reaching others or spreading into the air around them, and help to protect the wearer from exposure to airborne particles
  • Helps prevent the risk of cross-contamination
  • They are comfortable to wear and breathable
  • Easy to wear and remove
  • Fluid resistant and clinically approved EN14683
  • High 98%+ bacterial filtration efficiency
  • 3 layers

The WHO has created a series of videos and infographics which show people how to use face masks properly. Before putting on your mask, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap and hot water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Your hands should be clean whilst wearing it, and you should avoid touching your face or the mask whilst wearing it. When you’re removing your mask, you should again wash your hands thoroughly, and take it off only by unlooping the straps from behind your ears. Once you have removed it, it should be disposed of immediately, and you should wash your hands again.
